Shopping spree - January 2026

Unpacking a volatile month and the buying opportunities I jumped on, the kind I haven’t seen since the 2022 bear market.

In this update

My portfolio started the year with quite a bit of volatility as the market tries to make up its mind on whether to buy the rumor or sell the fact. In many cases, I believe the market is being irrational to the downside, presenting great buying opportunities I haven’t seen since the 2022 bear market.

I continued to add throughout the month, mostly into names that have been hit the hardest. In this update, I’ll cover what did well, what dragged, what I added, how my portfolio is positioned heading into February, and what my plan is from here.

Performance highlights

  • January performance 1: -7% vs S&P 500 +0.5%
  • Year-to-date performance: -7% vs S&P 500 +0.5%
  • 3-years performance: +144% vs +66%
