Deep dive: Applied Optoelectronics - Let there be light

AAOI is up almost 3x over the past year after riding the AI‑optics narrative. This deep dive is the result of 100+ hours of research to understand the sector, business, size of the opportunity ahead and risks that are barely talked about.

Deep dive: Applied Optoelectronics - Let there be light

You can now listen to this deep dive as a podcast, which you can find at the end of this article. Perfect if you're in a rush or simply prefer listening instead of reading.

I've been doing a lot of research in the optical networking space lately. In my recent piece on AI data center bottlenecks, I highlighted optics as one of the most important bottlenecks in the AI infrastructure stack, along with memory, power & cooling.

As you can see in the overview above, Applied Optoelectronics (AAOI) is operating in the optics segment. But what exactly is optics, why is it so important, and could AAOI still be a multibagger after a massive run of >300% over the past year?

After getting a lot more familiar with this industry, I can tell one thing for sure: this isn't the type of business where you buy first and research later. It's highly complex with a lot of moving pieces, interdependencies, nuances and a number of significant risks. So in this deep dive, I will not only cover AAOI, but also the broader context in which they operate.

Applied Optoelectronics key figures

  • Quarterly revenue of $134M (+34%)
  • Gross margin of 30% (up from 15% in 2023)
  • $248M debt
  • Free cash flow negative
  • Guided for $4.5B annualized 2027 revenue

Let that last one sink in for a bit. At the time of writing, AAOI has a market cap of $7B, meaning they are currently trading below 1.5x guided 2027 revenue, IF they can reach that target.

Management guided for over $1 billion in 2026 revenue, more than doubling 2025's record $456 million. And CEO Thompson Lin, the founder who started this in a university lab nearly 30 years ago, says demand is "much, much bigger" than even that.

It's easy to get very excited about AAOI considering they operate at a crucial part in the AI data center buildout, improving margins and a mind‑blowing outlook. But there's a big red flag along with several major risks, many of which I have not seen discussed before.
